SOCKS4 in one paragraph

SOCKS4 is the previous generation of the SOCKS protocol: it carries TCP traffic only, with no UDP and no authentication. It is still useful because some older tools and game clients only speak SOCKS4, and because these proxies are less used than SOCKS5, which sometimes means less congestion.

When to choose it

Choose SOCKS4 only when your software asks for it. For everything else, SOCKS5 does the same job and more, and for web-only tools an HTTP proxy is usually easier to configure.

A note on speed

How often is this list updated?

Every two hours. Our server opens a real connection to each proxy and times it; the ones that fail are dropped, so everything you see here answered within the last couple of hours.

Why does a proxy stop working minutes later?

Free proxies are shared by thousands of people, so one that was healthy during our check can be saturated by the time you use it. Copy a few, test them, and reload after the next update instead of saving a list for later.

Are free proxies safe?

Treat them as disposable. You do not know who runs them and the traffic is not encrypted, so they are fine for checking how a site looks from another country or testing a script, and wrong for logging into accounts. For streaming or privacy, a VPN is the right tool.
